The Gulf of Mexico Workshop on International Research (GOM-WIR), an invitation-only workshop, is the first and most comprehensive of its kind ever attempted in the Gulf of Mexico and is limited to approximately 150 participants. The information generated through GOM-WIR will be of value to all countries surrounding the world’s ninth largest body of water. GOM-WIR will provide the scientific community an opportunity to guide how best we can enhance our understanding of the current state of international environmental science related to ocean stewardship of the Gulf as a large marine ecosystem.
International coordination of environmental science initiatives between the USA and Mexico is a high-priority for multiple Gulf stakeholders. As relations between the USA and Cuba improve opportunities for joint research between the three nations of the Gulf on these issues will also grow. GOM-WIR will focus on several priority issues and will foster opportunities for the scientific, management and regulatory communities to work together on addressing these important problems. One priority issue will be to ensure the safe and responsible use of offshore resources, including oil and gas reserves. This work will transcend international boundaries to help ensure that decision making is informed by the best available science from an ecosystem-based, basin-wide perspective.
Scientists interested in receiving an invitation to attend GOM-WIR may submit a request through the Request an Invitation form and follow instructions to be considered as a participant [NOTE: We received a strong response, and any further requests for an invitation will be placed in a waiting list pool for consideration as we finalize the list of participants.]. Participants will be informed by January 15, 2017 regarding acceptance.
Please note: Participants will be responsible for all travel and lodging required to participate in the workshop. Breakfast, lunch, and breaks will be provided. Workshop participants who may wish to also participate in the State of the Gulf of Mexico Summit will be eligible for a discounted registration.
